Mount Vernon man facing weapon charge in probe into Yonkers man's shooting death

MOUNT VERNON - Police have charged a Mount Vernon man with weapon possession as part of an investigation into a Yonkers man's death.

Police say Shawn J. Fountain, 32, had the .38-caliber handgun used to shoot Leon Smith, also 32, of Yonkers.

Smith was shot in the neck Oct. 23 in Mount Vernon but was able to drive himself to Mount Vernon Hospital. He died 14 days later.

Fountain was arrested last night and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, police said. He has not been charged with the shooting.

Police have scheduled a press conference on the arrest for 1 p.m. today.
